American Diabetes Alert...Reduce Your Risk

You could be at risk for diabetes. More than 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with the disease and an estimated 5.4 million have diabetes and don't know it. If you are overweight, unfit, have high blood pressure or a family history of diabetes you could be at risk. By taking good care of ourselves with healthy eating and consistent exercise, we can lower the chances of getting diabetes as well as aim at a better quality of life.

One in three diabetics are unaware they have the disease and may leave it untreated for years, according to the American Diabetics Association (ADA). Join the ADA's national focus on diabetes on March 28th to raise awareness of this silent killer and take a test to see if you are at-risk. Alert yourself to the facts.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin, which is used to convert sugars, starches and other food into energy.

Some warning signs to look for include:
  • losing weight without trying

  • feeling unusually hungry or thirsty

  • blurred vision

  • extreme fatigue

  • need to go to the bathroom often

You have a greater risk of diabetes if you:
  • are over the age of 45
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • are overweight
  • do not exercise regularly
  • have had gestational diabetes, a form of diabetes that occurs in 2 to 5% of all pregnancies
If undetected, diabetes can cause blindness, kidney disease and nerve damage, while increasing the chance of heart disease and stroke. The ADA reports that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It has no cure. However a consistent routine of insulin shots, healthy diet and exercise will lower the glucose levels and help the body to use them properly, allowing diabetics to lead regular lives.
