Heart Diet Guidelines - General Population
A healthy eating pattern includes foods from all food groups. You don't have to eliminate anything you can't live without, but you shouldn't indulge in excess. The major guidelines under this category are: 1) consume a variety of fruits and vegetables and grain products, including whole grains, and 2) include fat-free and low-fat dairy products, fish, legumes, poultry, and lean meats.
A new recommendation under this general area is to eat two servings of fish weekly. The servings of fruits and vegetables daily should be five or more, and you should have six or more grain servings per day. The AHA has never promoted dietary fiber much, but they now recommend foods that provide at least 25 grams daily.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Although the cholesterol recommendation of less than 300 mg per day remains, the guidelines acknowledge that there are no studies indicating eating eggs raise the risk of heart disease and many studies show no risk from one or two eggs daily. An egg provides about 210 mg cholesterol, so there seems to be an internal contradiction in this part of the guidelines.
